Distance learning is similar to online learning for the MBA programs, but there are some essential differences as well. Due to the advances in technology, distance learning is becoming more and more popular with students. Distance learning enables the students to stay in their home town yet complete classes from an accredited university or business school.
Typically, distance learning MBA programs has made use of educational channels in order to broadcast live or taped class lectures in specific fields of endeavor. Now, with the advent of Internet web cams and other technological advances, the lectures can be accessed by any students with the necessary hardware. Sometimes the distance learning program is preceded by a comprehensive orientation on campus, but not always.
The student applies for admission to the MBA program in the same way as with the traditional programs, then 'attends' televised classes, and takes examinations with the use of a proctor. This allows for somewhat flexible scheduling, and is much less invasive than on-campus learning.
While attending distance learning MBA classes, the student is able to continue with work and family commitments from the comfort of his home. Sometimes the employer will be willing to assist with tuition reimbursement or by providing flexible work schedules in order for the student to attend class lectures.
The once common complaint about lack of interaction between students and between student and professor has largely been eliminated with the widespread use of the Internet and chat rooms. The students have a great opportunity to discuss class work with each other by going on line, and the faculty and staff of the MBA program also is usually more readily available for discussion and questions.
Business internships are very helpful procedures to help determine whether the classes which are part of your MBA curriculum are leading to the job results which you may have anticipated in the cataloging of your strengths and weaknesses.
