While different MBA programs stress different course emphasis, there are some basics which cut across all the types of MBA emphasis and these are the characteristics which make the acquisition of an MBA degree so valuable to many people and businesses.

First is the management of resources. In order to even apply for admission to an MBA degree program, the person must have given thought to where they want to go with their career path. They have to take the time to find out about various programs available and see which if any will best fit their personal circumstances. They need to determine what resources are available of time and money in order to complete the program and pay for it. These same characteristics and abilities are one of the factors required to successfully enter and complete the MBA program

Second the MBA degree will assist in learning about all facets of business. The student will study successful and unsuccessful methods from the past and will learn about cutting edge procedures for the future. This will not only be formal 'book learning' but will include hands on experience in processes and procedures.

The MBA basics include development of leadership qualities. The person who begins such a program of graduate study has already demonstrated leadership through their past activities. Acceptance into a program for graduate work means the student has demonstrable qualities of leadership.

One other important MBA basic is the formation of friendships and networks which will stand in good stead throughout the rest of his business career.
